Therapeutic Approach

EMDR and Trauma Focused Therapy

I am a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional and have been trained in EMDR and other Trauma informed practices. Many people are curious about EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). It is a therapy that enables people to heal from symptoms of emotional distress that are the result of a significant trauma. People often refer to this type of trauma as PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). Studies show that EMDR can quickly accomplish what once took traditional therapy years to achieve. By removing emotional blocks caused by the trauma, EMDR can offer symptom relief and help clients heal so that they can re-engage in work, life and love.

GOTTMAN COUPLES THERAPY

therapist in gaithersburg, teresa greenThe Gottman method is an evidence based form of couples therapy that helps couples improve communication and creates a deeper understanding, empathy, awareness and connectedness within their relationships.

In sessions, couples are encouraged to identify and address the natural defenses that hinder communication and intimacy making it possible to uncover the passion and love they once had. Other therapies, like the work of Terry Real, Esther Perel and Sue Johnson’s Emotionally Focused Therapy bring additional insight into the problems a couple may be experiencing.

“Love doesn’t just sit there, like a stone,
it has to be made, like bread; remade all the time, made new.”

NEUROSCIENCE AND PSYCHOTHERAPY

It can be argued that to be an effective psychotherapist today it is critical to have a working knowledge of neurobiology and the brain. Neuroscience provides us with information on how and why psychological and emotional changes take place as well as which therapy approaches work best. When changes take place through the therapeutic process we now know that neural pathways in the brain have been altered and changed in order to accommodate a new way of being. Targeted change can be created more effectively when we work with the brain instead of against it and clients are more likely to sustain good habits when they understand the brain science behind those choices.
